Episode 406: Weekly Reflection: Facing One’s Fears And Moving Forward With Confidence
Host Jason Connell returns for a "Weekly Reflection" episode of Good Thinking, and introduces a new weekly theme "facing one’s fears," following a prior focus on "staying calm in stressful times." He shares how a recent car accident made him hesitant to ride his bicycle to yoga, even considering selling it, but he chose to face the fear, rode again, and enjoyed it more after getting a tuneup. He outlines five takeaways: facing fears builds inner strength and resilience; reduces fear’s intensity once approached directly; creates new opportunities beyond comfort zones; strengthens self-trust by acting amid uncertainty; and leads to personal growth, perspective, and progress on the other side of fear. He previews the theme running Monday through Saturday, promotes the new Good Thinking Life website for streaming and links, and invites listeners to reach out.

Just curious. Welcome to Just Curious Media. This is Good Thinking, and I'm Jason Connell. So I'm back with another weekly reflection episode. And we're coming off of a wonderful week. I really enjoyed the theme of remaining calm in stressful times. And we are pivoting to a new theme, and that is facing one's fears. I thought of this the other day when I faced my own. Coming out of the car accident, I was very apprehensive to ride my bike. Now, not a motorcycle, it's just a bicycle. But I really enjoy riding it to and from my yoga studio, which is only like three miles away. So it's like a six-mile round trip, straight shot. But after being impacted from someone not paying attention, and I was in a car and still banged up, it really gave me pause. And I even thought, I'm selling it. That's it, I'm selling it. But I stopped, thought about it more. There's a lot of enjoyment I get from riding it. I am very safe on it. And rather than just making such a quick decision, like a knee-jerk reaction to something, I decided to face my own fears. And I rode my bike and really enjoyed it. In fact, I even got the bike a tune-up, got the tires fixed because it needed a tune-up. And I enjoy it more than ever now. So I thought it would be an appropriate theme for all of you because we all have to face fears. So these are five positive takeaways from facing one's fears. Number one, facing fears builds inner strength. Moving towards discomfort develops resilience and a deeper sense of capability. Yeah, I like that. Building the inner strength because that's what happens. The minute you face a fear and make it through that fear, you build inner strength, a confidence, and a deeper sense of capability, which is wonderful. Number two, facing fears reduces their intensity. What feels overwhelming often becomes more manageable once it is approached directly. Yeah, usually the fear is much greater in your mind than what it actually is. Like you obsess over something, you have sleepless nights thinking about it, and the minute you face it, it's like, why didn't I do that sooner? I mean, that's usually always the case. So we should all learn from that and just take the fight to the fear. Number three, facing fears creates new opportunities. Stepping beyond comfort zones opens doors that would otherwise remain closed. Right. If you don't face a fear, you don't get anywhere. You don't even know what's behind that door. Maybe the fear is I don't want to ask them for this opportunity, or for an investor, or what have you. But the minute you do, it could unlock a lot of things in your life. Just getting over that fear. Number four, facing fears strengthens self-trust. Taking action despite uncertainty reinforces confidence in handling challenges. I love that. The more self-trust we have, self-belief, the better we are as people. And you can tackle challenges, which will only help you in so many ways as you navigate many more challenges to come in life. And number five, facing fears leads to personal growth. Growth happens on the other side of fear, where new experiences shape perspective and progress. And that's wonderful. I like how they put that. Growth is on the other side of fear. You make it through fear, and you're going to grow as a person. You're going to have more perspective. You're going to see progress. So honestly, fear is just there as a test. Don't give it any more than it deserves. It's only keeping you from where you want to be. And I can tell you from experience, the minute you break through that, you're better off, you're winning, you're happier. So I'm super excited that this is the theme for next week, which will be this coming Monday through Saturday. And again, please check out goodthinking.life. I'm super excited to have that first version of the website live. It's a great hub to send people to. If they don't really know how to navigate podcasts, just send them there. They can at least stream the show there, or you can. And you can also click on the links. Apple links live now, adding more things. But super excited that that went live. And please reach out to the show. We want to hear from more people. It means a lot to us. But above all, thank you so much for listening. And we'll see you next time.
